Schoodic Retreat 2.0

September 16 - September 20

Schoodic Point

9/16 – 9/20

Co-presented By Sea Sherpa Kayak, Guillemot Kayak and Chesapeake Light Craft

Back by popular demand, the Schoodic Retreat is very much a unique event offering a one-of-a-kind combination of open water instructional, exploratorium and fine-living retreat. This year we are expanding to a 5 day format(makes for an organic, progressive build), allowing us the time to discover all that the fantastic setting deserves.  This region exemplifies the very best of rugged, remote and dramatic downeast  shoreline.
Set against the spectacular backdrop of Acadia National Park, we have easy access to dramatic sea cliffs, off shore islands, the best rock gardening on the eastern sea board, an amazing surf venue and the Sullivan Reversing Falls– a large white water field, in a salt water setting, that can work on both the flood and ebb.
Also new this year, we are expanding to 3 Paddle Pods.  Participants will join a pod of similarly experienced paddlers and there is flexibility to jump in with other pods as the fit allows.  This assures that everyone from those first testing open waters to full on, hard driving, advanced paddlers, will have a happy home.
Last year we established an opportunity for non-paddling friends and family.  Building on success, this year, we are offering programs to compliment the local sites that include hiking at Acadia, touring local art galleries, sightseeing quaint historic towns, renting and riding bikes on historic carriage trails, etc… We’ll supplement with a formal garden interpretive tour, a discussion of the night sky led by a knowledgable amateur astronomer complete with a powerful telescope, a naturalist presenting on the state’s bald eagle program and a casual step-by-step, super fun, art class where adult beverages meets the DIY world of art.
On water additions for 2019 include special pricing to allow the option for paddlers to take a day off, exploration&play islands and coastline outside the area, a dedicated boat swap daywhere everyone can try Nick’s Schade’s boats(generously supplied by Nick and CLC) in the water they were designed for, an optional rolling class and the addition of a third paddle pod which means everyone can paddle with others that are similarly experienced.  We will also be unveiling a composite version of Nick’s Guillemot Kayak Petryl Play built by our own Joey Schott owner of Turning Point Boatworks.
Seasoned open water kayakers take note:  Some of Nick’s designs are built specific for rough water play.  They are highly responsive, as durable as their composite cousins, as easy to repair and MUCH lighter weight.  CLC sells them in pre-cut kits and Nick offers free on line video guides with top tips on build technique.
The staff remains the same as 2018, featuring Gerry Polinsky, and Nick Schadejoined by Barb Toddand Joey Schottwith Carl Tjerandsen, Eric Hansen and Joell Jacobrunning the off water programming. There are options to extend your stay, both before and after the event.  We’ll be housed and fed at the Schoodic Institutewhich is a beautiful wooded facility, situated right on Schoodic Point that features comfortable living, good eats, on-campus hiking trails and shuttles to town, Acadia Park and Bar Harbor.
Participants will be housed in roomy apartments.  Both couples and singles will have their own bedrooms in two bedroom apartments, with a shared bathroom, living room, kitchen and dining area.  Hearty, high quality meals are served in a oversized log cabin style building.  Dietary particulars are accommodated.
Nick has created a more detailed promo on his Guillemot Kayak website.  It includes photos and a short video.  His copy is geared towards his clientele but, rest assured, there is a pod that is a good fit for any level of active water paddler.
