Downeast Cayak Kamping
September 8 - September 14
Downeast Cayak Kamping & Skills Week
9/8 – 9/14
Jonesport Area, Downeast Maine
Equal parts exploratorium, open water skills development and camp craft, this event covers a lot of great stuff. Downeast offers the most rugged, isolated and fantastically scenic shoreline and islands in the country. The plan is to paddle for a couple of days than set up a base camp on an island from which to explore, play offshore reefs and rocks, hold “classroom” sessions, work navigation skills, cook yummy camp meals and try our hands at coasteering: climbing on and jumping off rocks into the water and playing in the swell. It’s insanely fun and much more sane than it sounds.
Out of consideration for the environment and in the name of human relations, we’ll limit the group to just a few paddlers. The schedules allows for drive time at the head and tail as this is a remote area. We’ll meet up in town, Saturday evening to eat a last greasy meal and go through kit. Launching by mid day Sunday, we’ll break free of the shackles of civilization till the following Friday – returning to the launch self satisfied and half feral.
Participants are expected to supply the bulk of their own gear. There are options for renting larger items like sleeping bags and tents. Camp stoves can be shared among the group and dinners will be a community event. Gerry has a long history of expedition style exploration and is truly excited to host this event. Kayak camping allows for uniques adventure opportunities and may be the most efficient way to improve all sorts of skills.
Skill Level: Moderate To Advanced Open Water Paddlers
Once the final headcount is in, we can explore options for housing/campgrounds on the first and last nights.
